During the 1918 influenza epidemic in rural Michigan, an unmarried, childless Irish-American teacher takes in an orphaned Polish-American girl while struggling to re-open the one-room schoolhouse, maintain her independence, take ownership of her family's farm, launch her personal life, and overcome prejudices in her family, church, and community.
